Inspiring Explorers’ Expedition 2019 – calling for applicants

Heritage Travel

Apply to join the Antarctic Heritage Trust on a 10 day expedition in March 2019 to explore the Antarctic Peninsula by ship with the opportunity for kayak excursions in Antarctic waters with New Zealand Olympian Mike Dawson and expert guides. Travel via ship from South America across the famed Drake Passage with our partner One Ocean Expeditions.

Experience the spirit of the early polar explorers; a remarkable legacy the Trust cares for on behalf of humanity. Learn about the history of Antarctica, its wildlife, science and its importance to the world today.

The Trust’s Inspiring Explorers’ programme aims to connect young people with the spirit of exploration and the remarkable explorer legends and legacy that the Trust cares for in Antarctica. The Inspiring Explorers’ Expeditions provide the opportunity for young people to go out and explore the world’s polar regions and, in turn, share their stories and inspire others to explore.

Current New Zealand Olympic white water kayaker Mike Dawson will join the team as a mentor and inspiring young New Zealander. Mike is a two-time Olympian and has mentored young people through his role as an Olympic Youth Ambassador.

The 2019 expedition will appeal to a broad range of New Zealanders and we are excited to be offering an opportunity to introduce young explorers to Antarctica. You don’t need to be an expert kayaker to apply.

Watch the launch video and find out more information at www.inspiringexplorers.com.

The expedition is heavily sponsored and is open to New Zealanders between 18–30 years old. There will be up to five Inspiring Explorer places available.

Inspiring Explorers will each need to deliver an outreach programme to share their stories and inspire others to explore. Outreach could include presentations, video content, virtual reality creation, social media and blogging, writing, photography or another project using your talents.

Highlights of this expedition include:

  • An opportunity to experience Antarctica!
  • A chance to explore the Antarctic Peninsula with expert guides
  • An opportunity to learn and develop new skills, including kayaking
  • An opportunity to join Olympian Mike Dawson and One Ocean Expeditions’ guides for kayaking adventures in Antarctic waters
  • A night camping on the ice (subject to conditions)
  • The chance to get out of your comfort zone and do something you’ve never done before

The Trust has completed three successful Inspiring Explorers’ Expeditions — retracing Shackleton, Worsley and Crean’s route across South Georgia Island, ascending Mt Scott on the Antarctic Peninsula, and a 560km traverse of the Greenland ice cap honouring Fridtjof Nansen’s original crossing.

Applications close at midnight Sunday, 30 September 2018. Apply online at www.inspiringexplorers.com.
