To mark the 60th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty on 1 December, the NZ Antarctic Society has partnered with LINZ to produce a new wall map of Antarctica which will be sent to every school in NZ this month. The large A0-sized wall map is a huge advance on previous maps of Antarctica.

The production of the new map was backed by a number of supporting partners including Victoria University of Wellington, Otago University, Waikato University, AUT University, NIWA, GNS, NZ Sea Rise, and the Antarctic Report.

The National Library in Wellington is hosting the launch of the new map, and they will exhibit the map alongside some of its historic predecessors in a three week mini-exhibition entitled “Mapping Antarctica – the frozen continent revealed”. The launch event will feature three speakers from the partner organisations.

The map will be made available to NZAS members as an insert in the next edition of Antarctic magazine, due shortly.

All New Zealand Antarctic Society members welcome.

Nicholas O’Flaherty,

North Island Vice President.
