Len Gillman is a semi-retired professor of conservation biogeography and evolutionary ecology. He held an academic position at AUT for 29 years and was Head of Science for 10 years. He has 47 peer-reviewed scientific publications and has conducted field work in locations that extend from the wet tropical environment of Fiji to the arid tropical deserts of Namibia and Australia, and from the Arctic to Antarctic.

In Antarctica, he has mapped Specially Protected Areas using drones, collected data for creating virtual reality experiences of historic huts and investigated spatial patterns of microbes.

Recently, he has given expert evidence for Auckland Council on climate change mitigation. He has been a rock climber and tramper since 1970.
