Antarctic magazine – advice to contributors Antarctic is a full-colour, magazine-style, quarterly publication supplied free to all members of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, and also available on subscription. From its first publication in 1956, the magazine has covered activities relating to all nations working in the Antarctic, Southern Ocean, and sub-Antarctic islands. Antarctic is published four times a year: March, June, September, and December. Article submissions: The Editor of Antarctic welcomes articles from any person on any subject related to Antarctica, the Southern Ocean or sub-Antarctic regions. Topics could include: • Scientific investigations • Environmental protection • Antarctic Treaty related matters • History of exploration and explorers • Heritage protection • Private expeditions • Governmental activities affecting the region • Arts and culture • Book/music reviews • Tributes • Antarctic functions and events Articles may be submitted at any time to the Editor at editor@antarcticsociety.org.nz. The Editor reserves the right to decline to publish an article. Deadlines for each publication are generally the 1st of the month prior to publication: 1 February, 1 May, 1 August, and 1 November. Written material: • Articles should be typed in Times New Roman 11-point font using Microsoft Word and emailed to the Editor. • Each article should have a short paragraph at the start which acts as a leader to the article. • Authors should request our style guide for the magazine’s conventions regarding spelling and other style matters. Copyright notice: Only original pieces of work can be accepted. Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the Editor. • The Editor reserves the right to edit or otherwise alter all contributions, but authors will receive proofs for approval before publication. • Copyrights for articles published in Antarctic magazine are retained by the authors, with first publication rights granted to Antarctic magazine. Antarctic / New Zealand Antarctic Society Inc is not responsible for subsequent uses of the work. It is the author’s responsibility to bring an infringement action if so desired by the author. Article sizes: • Book or music reviews should be no more than 400 words plus a high-resolution scan of the cover of the item being reviewed. Book reviews should include the ISBN/ISSN, publisher, and recommended retail price. • Short one-page article requires 500 words plus 1 image. • Two-page/double spread article requires 1,100 words plus 2–3 images. • Please contact the Editor if you wish to submit a longer article (over 1,500 words). • Naturally, there is a trade-off between word count, and images, or image size. We’ll do our best to accommodate all submissions. Images: • Images should be high resolution (at least 300 dpi) in jpg or tiff format and should be accompanied by a caption and photographer credit for each image. • Authors must ensure that they have permission to use images that are not their own, and must supply written permission from the copyright holders to use any images (including those from the Internet) that are submitted. • Images for consideration for the front and back covers must be portrait in orientation and of very high resolution.
