Andrew Leachman awarded naval honours

Lester Chaplow

The New Zealand Antarctic Society extends its congratulations to Andrew Leachman on his award of Honorary Captain of the Royal New Zealand Navy.

On 27 June, the Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral John Martin, bestowed the position of Honorary Captain of the Royal New Zealand Navy to Andrew Leachman. Andrew is a master mariner with 55 years of seagoing experience specialising in the Antarctic region. In 2011, he joined the RNZN as an ice navigation consultant and helped to establish, and sustain, the Navy’s Antarctic maritime patrol and response capability. He has inspired a generation of Naval officers and sailors to better understand the Southern Ocean, which demands a level of respect and fascination beyond any other ocean upon which the Royal New Zealand Navy operates.
