2017 National Speaker: Anthony Powell

Linda Kestle, Auckland Branch President

Our NZAS 2017 National Speaker Anthony Powell gave an awesome presentation on 1 August, to a 140+ person gathering in Auckland, made up NZAS, Alpine Sports Club and Auckland Tramping Club.

His topic was Antarctica: Living at the End of the World. Anthony talked in detail with many video snippets about his experiences on living in Antarctica, how the bases have evolved over time, and his own personal journey to becoming a full time filmmaker, after living down at the Ice for 10 seasons. What a night, and a great insight into all aspects of “life on the Ice” from the perspective of the Environment, Science, Infrastructure, Scenery, Wildlife and day to day life. What a generous man, unselfishly sharing so many images and stories, and staying to answer so many questions from the spellbound audience.

Anthony subsequently spoke at Wellington and Canterbury branches, and two more presentations have been arranged for Dunedin on 29 November, and Wanaka (date TBC). Please see our events page for further details.
